Volunteers Needed for Education Outreach Truss Building Activity

In conjunction with the Science Education Partnership the Lambton chapter of the PEO will once again offer schools the chance to participate in an activity celebrating National Engineering Month (NEM).

Volunteers will visit Grade 5 classrooms in pairs to lead students through a truss building activity. Students work in pairs to build a truss structure to given specifications. Trusses are tested to measure the load at failure. Prospective volunteers will first be invited to observe a classroom session to learn what is involved. The activity takes approximately two thirds of a school day (~4 hours).

This opportunity aligns with expectations in the Gr. 5 Forces Acting on Structures unit. All materials will be provided by the SEP Science Centre. Students will have the real-world engineering challenge of building the strongest truss they can with the least amount of material.

On November 18th, 2017 the Lambton chapter hosted their annual Mathletics Competition at Great Lakes Secondary School.  The event welcomed 45 grade five through eight students from 15 schools. They participated in a math-based competition to apply their current math knowledge and learn some new concepts.

Congratulations to the students from Rosedale Public School who took home the Team Award for the top school. A special shout-out to Colonel Cameron who got 2nd with only 3 students and to Gregory A. Hogan for their solid third place finish.

The top three students from each grade were awarded cash prizes of $75, $50, and $25. The winners can be found in the results document linked below.

Finally, a huge thank-you to the energetic volunteers who made this event possible! See everyone next year!

Go ENG Girl 2017

2017 was the first year the Lambton chapter of the PEO was able to team up with Western University to bring Go ENG Girl to Sarnia. The event hosted 47 girls in grades 7 through 10 at Great Lakes Secondary School to learn about the wonderful world of engineering: "A Caring Profession."

The chapter would like to thank Western University for all of their help facilitating this event and bringing it to one of the few non-university cities.

We would also like to thank all of the volunteers that made it possible.

The new season of FIRST LEGO League has begun.  This year's challenge is called Hydrodynamics and challenges teams of students in grades 4 to 8 to improve the way that people find, transport, use, or dispose of water.  Over 200 000 students on 30 000 teams around the world will work to identify a problem within the human water cycle, design an innovative solution, and share their findings with others.  Teams will also build, test, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS kits to solve the set of 18 Hydrodynamics missions all while operating under FIRST LEGO League's signature Core Values.

The 12th annual Sarnia Regional FIRST LEGO League Tournament will be held on Saturday, December 9th.  Last season, 19 teams from Lambton and Kent counties competed, with the top 3 teams advancing to the Ontario West Championships. For more information about the tournament, check out the event page.

Anyone interested in becoming a judge, referee, or volunteer for the Sarnia Regional Tournament, please contact Mr. Jeff Laucke.
