A new school year is starting and the PEO Lambton Chapter is again sponsoring a Bridge Building Challenge, an initiative through Adopt-a-Scientist, in schools to promote interest in Science and Engineering.
From October to February, pairs of volunteers visit the classes, explain types of structures and what makes them strong. Students then apply these principles, to build a bridge with craft sticks and glue. Students work in teams of 4 to build one bridge. The bridge has to meet prescribed dimensions (length, width, height) and carry a weight of 2.5 kg. The strongest bridge in each class will be entered in the county-wide testing in March during National Engineering Month events at Lambton Mall. This testing is a festive occasion and attracts a large audience. There are prizes for the 3 strongest bridges.
The program is very successful and growing every year. It is fun for the students, teachers, and volunteers. We always invite new volunteers to join. If you would like to participate and pass your knowledge on to aspiring “engineers and scientist”, please contact Volker. You don’t have to be and engineer.
